Home Gym Equipment And Machine Names

What Are Dumbbells?

fixed weight dumbbells

Fair warning. This section is a more extended read than the others because it is well worth getting to know this piece of equipment since it is the backbone of any home gym.

Dumbbells are free weights that can be used for various exercises. Dumbbells are the most versatile piece of gym equipment available and, for many, can cover just about anything they need for a home gym.

They can be used to work all major muscle groups, including the chest, arms, shoulders, back, and legs. So you can do isolation exercises and full-body workouts with ease.

Dumbbells come in different sizes, weights, and types, so you can choose the right ones for you. There are 2 types of dumbbells that you can use: fixed weight and adjustable.

The adjustable dumbbells also have a couple of styles too; plate-loadable and weight selectable are detailed below.

Fixed Weight Dumbbells

Fixed weight dumbbells have a set amount of weight and are not adjustable. Their weight ranges from 1-100lbs each. The fixed-weight is convenient because you don’t have to worry about loading or changing plates (a time saver between sets), and they are also the most durable and can withstand drops without worrying about breaking.

They can also require more storage room than a set of adjustable ones. Depending on how many you have in your collection, you’ll want to get a storage rack of some sort to organize them and keep them out of the way.

They can be pretty expensive, ranging from $300 for a smaller set of 5 pairs to several thousand for a complete set with a wide range of weight increments.

It’s typical to expect to pay about $2 per pound. So, for example, that would make a pair of 50 lb. weights run close to $200. Buying a full set is not a must if you want to invest in other complementary pieces of equipment when starting out.

You can begin with a few pairs and build up a more comprehensive range over time.

Given their durability and wide range of weights available, this makes them a go-to for most people despite their cost.

Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable dumbbells are an excellent option for those who want the versatility of different weight increments without buying multiple sets. These dumbbells can be adjusted to the weight you need for each exercise, which makes them perfect for a home gym where space is limited.

There are 2 types of adjustable dumbbells:

  1. Weight selectable
  2. Plate loadable

Adjustable Weight Selectable Dumbbells

They can be less expensive overall than fixed weight dumbbells because all weight plates are integrated (part of the dumbbell itself). In addition, you get an entire set of weights in one small package, so your investment goes a long way.

Adjustable dumbells usually come in 50lb to 80lb pairs and cover an extensive range of weights in one unit.

This means less space is needed for storage, and at a turn of a selector pin or dial, choosing the right weight for your exercise is quick and straightforward. Just turn the dial and go.

They can seem pricey at first, starting anywhere from $350 to $1000 per pair, but in the end, they win the price and storage space war because of the minimal footprint needed (just a small stand) and versatility.

However, there are some drawbacks. Adjustable dumbbells can be prone to breaking if dropped, and most of them are not expandable.

So choose wisely. If you get a 50lb set now and find that you need to upgrade later, you might be stuck and have to buy individual dumbbells if you need heavier weights.

I chose an 80lb set of Nuobell dumbbells myself.

Adjustable Plate Loadable Dumbbells

These adjustable dumbbells are the more traditional type and use weight plates that you add or remove to change the weight manually.

They take up less space than a set of fixed dumbbells because their weight plates can be hung or stacked.

Most plate loadable adjustable dumbbells come in increments of about 2.5lb to 10lb. Also if you already have an Olympic set of barbell weight plates, some of the smaller weights can be used as well. Since the dumbbell bar is the same dimensions as a barbell.

This can help save some money in the long run if you’ve already invested in barbells. The one minor drawback is that you have to unlock collars and change weights between sets, which can be problematic when doing drop sets or progressive load sets. It takes a lot more time to adjust than weight selectable ones.

Plate adjustable dumbbells start at about $60 and go up, making them more affordable than fixed or adjustable, selectable weight dumbbells.

What Is An Ab Roller Or Ab Wheel?

An ab roller, or ab wheel, is a simple device that helps you work your abdominal muscles. It consists of a cylindrical bar with two hand grips and a wheel.

To use it, you simply kneel down on the floor, place your hands on the bar, and roll forward until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Then, you move back to the starting position.

Start in a standing position for a significant challenge. Then, ease your way down and roll out to a plank without your knees touching the ground. This takes some serious effort, but the results can be good.

Ab rollers are relatively inexpensive, and they are a great way to get started with abdominal exercises. However, they do have some drawbacks.

First of all, they only work your abs in “mostly” one plane of motion, so you might want to complement them with other exercises that work your abs in different ways. Secondly, they can be challenging to use if you have weak wrists or poor balance.

If you’re looking for a challenging abdominal exercise, an ab roller is a fun but not necessary choice. Just make sure that you complement it with other exercises to get the most complete workout for your abs.

Summary:

The limited versatility places ab wheels at the lower end of gym equipment needs because ab exercises can be easily done without them.

What Is A Sit-Up Bench Or Abdominal Bench?

A sit-up bench is relatively inexpensive, and it’s a great way to add variety to your abdominal workouts.

It is a simple piece of equipment that allows you to do abdominal crunches and a wide range of core-strengthening exercises with more support than you would get from doing them on the floor.

The adjustable incline can help make the exercises more challenging as your strength improves. In addition, they can help keep your spine in a neutral position and reduce the chance of back injury.

Summary:

The sit-up bench is a fundamental piece of equipment that can help engage your core through a wide range of exercises and should be considered for a home gym because of its focus on core strength.

What Is A Sissy Squat Machine?

A sissy squat machine’s primary role is to work your quads and glutes. It can be used for ab crunches, sit-ups, back extensions, and push-ups.

Some sissy squat machines have hand grips for push-ups as an added feature to work your chest too.

It consists of a metal floor plate and roller pads to anchor your feet so that you can perform tougher ab exercises. The exercises only use body weight, so no weight plates are needed.

To use the machine for squat and glute exercises, simply place your feet under the roller pads, then slowly lower yourself down into a squatting position until your thighs are parallel to the floor.

Hold for a few seconds. Then raise up to the starting position.

Summary:

The sissy squat machine’s obvious use is for doing squats, but this piece is more valuable than most people give it credit If you are looking for something to use purely for bodyweight exercises, a sissy squat machine is excellent.

What Is A Squat Stand?

A squat stand, also known as a squat rack, is a freestanding frame mainly used for the back squat, front squat, and bench presses.

Some can store weight plates and are flexible enough to add some accessories, like a pull-up bar.

Safety attachments like spotter’s arms can also be attached to catch dropped weights if you fail a lift or work out alone.

Most squat racks are height adjustable to accommodate different-sized users. They are bulky but require far less space than half racks or full power cages.

They can be placed closer to a wall than full racks might.

Note: Like all racks, squat stands do not always come with weights. You will need a barbell, free weights, and an adjustable bench to maximize their utility.

Summary:

The squat stand is a piece of essential equipment for any home or garage gym. Although smaller than power racks, their more compact size means that they fit well enough in a small room if needed.

The ability to do squats, deadlifts, bench presses and pull-ups ensures that you have everything you need to grow and meet your strength goals. A squat stand is a solid choice if you are tight on budget.

What Is A Power Rack?

A power rack is a frame (sometimes called a cage or rig) that supports weight bars and plates.

It typically has four vertical posts with two horizontal beams at the top, called “catches,” which support the barbell during lifts such as the squat, military press, and bench press.

Most power racks also have safety features such as spotter arms and pins that can be set to catch weights in case of a failed lift.

They are typically made from heavy-duty steel and are tall enough to fit anyone. Power racks are large pieces of equipment that will require a fair amount of space (at least a bedroom sized room). Half Racks, foldables, and wall mount ones are better on space.

What Are The Types Of Power Racks Available?

Full Rack / Power Rack / Power Cage

A power cage or rack encloses the weight lifter on all sides and does not need spotter arms since lifts are performed inside the cage.

They are generally more versatile than half racks and wall-mounted ones because their size allows for the most expansion and storage of weight plates.

They will also have the highest load capacity, with some reporting up to 1500lbs.

Half Rack

There are 3 types of half racks, the standard freestanding, a wall-mounted one, and a foldable wall-mounted unit. A half rack is very similar to a full rack but is not as expandable.

A half rack might not have a weight load capacity that matches a full-sized rig.

However, you can expect about 1000lb loadable maximum for half racks and less than that for wall-mounted or foldable ones. They do share the same safety features and can use spotter arms in the event of a dropped lift.

Although not as expandable as a full rack, they still cover a massive range of exercises and do the job just fine.

The main benefit here is saving on cost and maximizing space.

Wall Mount Power Rack

A wall-mounted rack anchors to a wall and has a very compact size. This makes it ideal for small home gyms or garage gyms where space is at a premium.

Foldable Power Rack

A foldable power rack is a power rack that can be folded up against a wall when not in use. Foldable power racks have the same safety features as a half rack but with the added benefit of more floor space when folded up.

Unfortunately, plate storage is generally not available with folding racks, so you will need to use something to store your weights on, like a weight tree.

Power Rack Features And Benefits

What Are Barbells?

A barbell is for lifting free weights. It is a long metal bar with locking collars to load weight plates onto each end. Weighted plates that can be attached to each end.

Like dumbbells, barbells are a piece of essential gym equipment used for practically all weight lifting exercises.

Because of their width, most non-specialty barbells are rackable and can be stored on a squat or power rack.

They are also plate loadable so that you can get exactly the amount of weight you need to lift.

Barbells allow you to work all muscles in the body with a wide range of lifts such as bench presses, overhead presses, squats, deadlifts, curls, tricep extensions, and rows, making them the defacto goto for any home gym.

Some of the most popular barbells include standard barbells, Olympic barbells, curl bars, and trap bars.

Standard barbells are the most common type of barbell and are typically used for general weightlifting.

Olympic barbells are heavier and have a higher weight capacity than standard barbells.

Curl bars are shorter and have a curved shape that allows for a more comfortable grip during biceps curls and triceps extensions.

Trap bars are hexagonal-shaped and are often used for shrugs, deadlifts, and other compound exercises.

The list goes on, and there are even more specialized barbells beyond these, and we go into detail about each one here to help you decide which are best for you.

They are great for people who play sports, especially basketball and CrossFit exercises. They are often made from wood, metal, or are padded and come in various sizes.

Plyometric boxes can be used for box jumps, step-ups, box squats, push-ups, and more. They are a great piece of equipment for people looking to improve their cardio and lower body strength.

What Is The Difference Between Wood And Foam Plyo Boxes?

Wood Plyometric Boxes

We like the way wooden Plyometric Boxes feel. They feel solid when your feet land on them after a jump or doing step-ups with weights.

Foam Padded Plyometric Boxes

Padded plyo boxes are excellent alternative to wooden Plyometric Boxes. Because, they are much more forgiving for a jump.

You can bang up your shins if you fail a jump on the wooden ones and the padding on these just might save you bumps and bruises. They are firm enough to perform all the exercises, though.

What Are Weight Plates Or Free Weights?

Weight plates, also known as iron plates, are one of the most basic but essential equipment in any home gym.

The range of strength exercises that can be done with weight plates is practically endless.

Weight plates are attached to a barbell or dumbbell for squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.

When attached to a cable machine or suspension trainer, they can also be used for exercises like bicep curls and shoulder presses.

The weight on a weight plate can vary, but most weight plates range from 1.25 pounds to 45 pounds. The size of the weight plate also varies. There are a few types of weight plates to consider like standard iron or bumper plates.

What Are Standard Iron Weight Plates?

These plates cover the full range of weights from .25 to 45 pounds each. Although some are rubber coated, they are not suitable for dropping (like a bumper plate).

The diameters of these plates vary based on their weight. A 1.25-pound weight diameter of 5 inches to 17.5 inches for a 45-pound plate.

The size differences make them a good choice for a home gym because they can be used to load both dumbbells and barbells.

Some standard iron weight plates also have hand grips cut into them.

This is a sweet feature because it makes handling much more manageable than picking up a flat plate.

Their durable rubber coating means they can be dropped without damaging gym floors or the weights themselves.

Unlike standard iron plates, bumper plates share the same diameter (450mm – 17.7 inches) no matter how heavy they are.

As a result, they do not cover as broad a range of standard iron weight plates, starting from 10 pounds and going up to 45 in 5-pound increments.

Their larger diameter makes them awkward for dumbbell and EZ-bar exercises. Don’t take all of this to be marks against bumper plates.

They just fill a more narrow role and do so better than standard plates due to their purpose-built design.
